Actress Jean Smart was born and raised in Seattle, Washington, U.S., to Kathleen Marie "Kay" and Douglas Alexander Smart, a teacher as the second of four children. Her father was a first-generation Scottish-American.
Jean Smart is a 1969 graduate of Ballard High School in Seattle, was there that she gained an interest in acting in the drama program. She graduated from the University of Washington Professional Actors Training Program with a BFA.
Smart began her career appearing in regional theater throughout the Pacific Northwest just completing her graduation and since then actively working in the show industry.

In 1987, Jean Smart was married to actor Richard Gilliland and the couple has two sons but Gilliland died after a brief illness in March 2021.
